Will you be accepted if you have bad credit?
You can still get a credit card even if your credit record is poor. Lenders will always perform a credit check when you apply for a card, but these specialist cards are designed to help you rebuild your credit score if you remain within the credit limit and pay your card on time. There’s a good chance you’ll be able to get a credit card even if:

  • You’ve never borrowed money and don’t have a track record of repayments.
  • You’ve borrowed money and have not paid your lender back on time.
  • You don’t have a job or have a low-income part-time job.
  • You have had a County Court Judgement (CCJ) ruling against you.
  • You have been declared bankrupt. Unfortunately, if you have not been discharged from your bankruptcy ruling, you won’t be eligible for a credit card from any lenders.

The first step is to use a credit card eligibility checker to make a preliminary check you will be accepted for your application. It’s a crucial step because if you apply for a credit card and you are rejected, this can hurt your credit rating. Most credit card providers have an eligibility checker so make sure you use this before applying. You’ll need to be over 18 to apply for a card, and some lenders have other eligibility criteria such as employment, length of time at residence, income level and number of CCJs.

What's the best way to find a credit card if you've been refused credit?
Use FinancialAdvisor.co.uk’s list of credit cards for bad credit. These cards have been specially selected for you. These cards are provided by lenders that do issue cards if you have a weak credit history. You need to choose the card that best fits your needs carefully. There are different annual percentage rates (APR) of interest, various restrictions on eligibility and varying credit limits. Choose the best one for your needs.

How do cards for bad credit differ from mainstream credit cards?
You won’t find much difference between the mainstream cards issued to people with good credit history, and cards for bad credit. The main differences are the APR; it is usually significantly higher. Also, perks offered are fewer, so you won’t see free travel insurance, 0% balance transfers or reward points on many of the cards on offer to you.
Why should you get a credit card if you have a poor credit history?
If you can get accepted for a card for bad credit and you make repayments on time and stick to the credit limit, over time your credit score will improve. If you diligently pay on time and stay within your credit limit for 12 months, you’ll probably find your credit score will improve, and you’ll be able to apply for a card with a far better deal.
